Install Floor Drains Some Materials are Needed:

  • Floor drain of your choice
  • PVC pipes (various sizes based on your needs)
  • Adhesive sealant (plumber’s buddy to the rescue!)
  • Elbow fittings and pipe connectors
  • Screwdriver
  • Hacksaw or pipe cutter
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Bucket of patience (and perhaps a sense of humor)

Step 1: Plan, But Don’t over plan

Before you start:

  1. Take a moment to picture where the drain will go, not in your dreams or as a doodle on a cocktail napkin, but for real.
  2. Make sure you know the size of the gutter and pipes.
  3. Measure twice, cut once, and don’t measure in interpretive dance moves; numbers are better.

Step 2: Slice n’ Dice

Mark the spot where the drain will go. Cut through the floor carefully with whatever tool you’ve got that can handle the job. Power tools make you feel like a superhero, but remember: With great power comes great responsibility not to destroy your floor.

Step 3: Pipe Dreams

Lay your PVC pipe from the main drain line to your freshly cut hole. If you start to feel like a subpar character in a Super Mario game, don’t worry. That’s normal. Just focus on the pipes and try to avoid any goombas.

Step 4: Glue It, But Don’t Sniff It

Apply adhesive sealant at each pipe connection, ensuring they are as tight as your grip on reality while doing a DIY plumbing project. Give it time to set; don’t rush it like you do with your morning coffee.

Step 5: Secure The Drain

Place your drain into the hole and attach it to the pipe.Ensure it’s even by using a level. Nobody wants a wonky drain; it’s the crooked picture frame of plumbing.

Step 6: Screw It (Literally)

Fasten the drain using screws, ensuring it’s secure but not over-tightened. Screws should go in easier than convincing a teenager to clean their room.

Step 7: Test It, but Not with Champagne

Run some water to make sure everything is draining correctly. We advise against using champagne for this test, although you may feel like celebrating. Water should flow smoother than your best pick-up line.

Step 8: Seal the Deal

Use more sealant around the edge of the drain for that extra layer of security. This is your belt-and-suspenders approach to keeping things watertight.

Step 9: High Five Yourself

You did it! Go ahead, admire your work. On social media, post before and after pictures. Bask in the admiration of your neighbors who are too afraid to undertake plumbing projects.

And there you have it. You’ve successfully installed a floor drain without any major calamities. If you’re feeling overly confident now, it’s time to tackle something even more challenging. Hot tub in the living room, anyone?

Remember, they say Rome wasn’t built in a day, but they didn’t have this killer guide to help them. Happy
